What's Inside that Case Henry Unlocks in the Hit Series?
For much of season 5 of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are held captive inside a mental fortress forged from the memories of Vecna. The search for freedom in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to experience a defining event from Henry's youth—a moment that could contain the key to defeating him for good.

The Discovery in the Mine Shaft
When she finds Max in the world dubbed Camazotz, Max reveals she is taking refuge in a grotto that Henry avoids at all costs. A clever observation a spyglass pilfered from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the source of fear lies beyond the cave. By aligning her view with the shape, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.
In this place, they observe a Henry as a boy encounter an wounded, fearful individual. As the boy offers aid, the man panics and shoots, striking Henry in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly asks tearfully. It was a factor, but the act wasn't just a simple act of survival.
Similar to other plot points of the final season, the significance of the mine shaft incident originates in the live show Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
An Interdimensional Incident and A Spy's Mission
This backstory explains the 1943 event, which allegedly sent a warship into a dimension later called the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the lone returnee was the captain, who returned in a catatonic condition with an altered blood type.
That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, wanted to repeat this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker pilfered lab samples to sell to the Russian agents, who were desperate to launch their version of the tests. The man in the tunnel is the one who stole the materials.
So, What's in the Case?
Given what is understood of his research, the container would assuredly have some of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon handling the contents, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—abilities he would inadvertently transfer to the kids Brenner would experiment on.
A second theory, the container could have held exotic matter that later made its way to the secret facility, where it helps stabilize the parallel world. *The First Shadow* reveals that the boy somehow wound up in the Abyss, returning after half a day with a new blood type and personality. From then on, he struggles with the influence of a dark entity, similar to how Will was influenced by the Mind Flayer in the past.
The Power of Fear
Henry's enduring terror of that cave demonstrates how deeply scarring the encounter was for him. While he controls the army of monsters and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy remains. Fear is his tool, and the narrative points to a climactic battle between Vecna and Will, who has deliberately faced his own deepest fears to gain strength.
This journey has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Furthermore, Will now knows what the monster's own weakness, and this may grant a key upper hand in the series finale that awaits.
