The Young Spinner Earns Surprise Inclusion in English Test Series Squad
England have opted for a twelve-player squad just two days ahead of the first Ashes Test, with the 22-year-old spinner securing a unexpected spot.
The 22-year-old’s inclusion indicates that the visiting team will delay until the morning of the initial match to determine whether Perth Stadium pitch favor four seamers or the addition of a spin bowler.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the selected squad, indicating there are no doubts about their fast bowler's fitness.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the attack, with Carse most likely to miss out if the spinner makes the final team.
Ground Conditions Favor Pace Bowlers
Brendon McCullum had been anticipated to opt for an pace-only lineup on a venue that has hosted five previous Tests.
In those matches, 134 wickets have fallen to pace bowling, with only a small number to spin bowling.
Among these 40 wickets, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has taken the bulk, while overseas slow bowlers combined have just a handful.
On a ground renowned for its speed and carry, and whose curator, the pitch preparer, stated that these characteristics are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a side relying on fast bowlers is still the probable choice.
Alternative Choices Considered
Previously there was speculation that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the team to offer some spin while additionally bolstering the lower order.
However McCullum has chosen to keep faith with the young spinner, having said previously that he would be his preferred slow bowler for the Ashes.
In July, Lyon described the English spinner as “OK,” saying that “in my eyes, the experienced spinner is still the English best spinner.”
“This is a huge responsibility, and it can be a massive challenge for bowlers who lack experience in the previous in these conditions,” Lyon said of spin bowling in Australian Tests.
“I won't let my secrets out so they come out and perform well out here.”
