The Two Fatalities Identified in Brown University Attack as Law Enforcement Continue Hunt for Perpetrator.
The pair of scholars who were killed in the weekend's violent attack at Brown University had tributes paid to them on Monday – amid a widespread hunt for their shooter carried on following the discharge by authorities in Rhode Island of the only individual of interest in the case.
Tributes for Ella Cook
Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama, was remembered as “a wonderful, steady, devout, shining presence”, according to the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, which paid tribute to her at a ceremony on Sunday.
Her role included the vice-presidency of Brown’s division of College Republicans of America, as the club stated. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also posted sympathies online, stating: “It's indescribable. Thinking of her kin and peers, especially her parents.”
MukhammadAziz Umurzokov
The other deceased individual was an Uzbek national named MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, a citizen of Uzbekistan in his freshman year at the prestigious university, family members said.
His name was officially acknowledged by the foreign office of Uzbekistan.
“He was exceptionally gentle, witty, and bright. His ambitions were lofty of becoming a neurosurgeon and aiding others,” his sibling Samira said in a tribute.
Details of the Attack
Nine more persons were wounded in the violent event in the school of engineering of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the university's examination week.
Law enforcement reported by the end of Sunday that a 24-year-man arrested in a search at a lodging about approximately 17 miles from the campus earlier in the day was being released.
“There is a killer at large,” said the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.
He added, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you must reassess and pursue a different angle, and that is the current situation over the last day or so.”
Ongoing Concerns
Brett Smiley, Brett Smiley, admitted: “This will probably generate renewed concern for our public”.
The shooter began shooting inside a classroom in the engineering building on Saturday afternoon, discharging in excess of 40 shots from a handgun, a law enforcement official told the media outlet.
Police that searched the inn found two firearms and two ammunition clips when the individual was detained, according to reports.
The Wounded Victims
Of the nine hurt, one student was released from the hospital, mentioned the university president, Christina Paxson. Seven more were in critical but stable condition, and one remained in critical care, police said on Sunday.
Durham Academy, a independent school in the city of Durham, said Kendall Turner, Kendall Turner, was one of the critically injured.
Further Tributes
Cook was remembered at a memorial in Birmingham on Sunday. A reverend stated, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only here growing up... but at Brown she was a radiant presence in that institution as well.”
A group leader, Martin Bertao, posted a statement from the organization. “Ella was recognized for her courageous, valiant, and compassionate nature as she served her chapter and fellow classmates,” he said.
The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “extremely sorrowful” by the passing of Umurzokov in a tribute. “Our profound condolences go out to the Umurzokov family, friends, and fellow students and mourn the loss of his potential.”
Broader Statistics
Saturday’s killings at Brown, the seventh oldest in the US college with about thousands of bachelor's and postgraduate students, occurred during one of at least 392 mass shootings reported in the US so far in the current year, according to statistics. That Monday marked the 349th day of the year.
