The royal figure relinquishes his honor as Duke of York.
He is surrendering his honors, among them the York's Duke, he has announced in a personal statement.
He has been under growing scrutiny over his associations with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, with demands for the monarchy to take action against him.
That now appears to have resulted in the figure deciding to of his own accord return his honors and to relinquish involvement of the Order of the Garter.
In his statement he said he continued to "vigorously refute the allegations against me".
"In talks with the monarch, and my direct and broader family, we have concluded the ongoing allegations about me take away from the work of the King and the royal household," said a announcement from him.
"I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and land first.
"I stand by my choice five years ago to withdraw from official duties.
"With the King's approval, we feel I must now go a additional measure. I will therefore no longer employ my title or the awards which have been conferred upon me. As I have said earlier, I strongly dispute the claims against me."
The royal has faced a range of scandals, including a legal case he settled with the plaintiff, questions about his economic affairs and his involvement with an alleged foreign agent.
He will stay a royal - but will cease to be the the Duke, a designation bestowed from his parent, the former monarch.
He had already ceased to be a "working royal" and had given up the use of his royal style and no longer participated at state occasions. His status now will be even more lessened.
His former spouse will be known as Sarah and no longer the Duchess, but their children will continue to have the honor of princess.
He has been under intense scrutiny over his associations with convicted sex offender Epstein, more lately featuring inquiries about when he had truly severed contact.
In his television appearance, he had said that he had severed all connections with the financier after they had been seen together in New York in the end of 2010.
But messages sent in the following year later surfaced indicating that he had privately stayed in touch with him, including exchanging a note: "Keep in close touch and we'll meet again soon!"
There had been growing displeasure in the royal household at the controversies that remained to plague the royal.
Next week a book released after death by the accuser will be published which is anticipated to bring additional attention on the royal's association with the plaintiff and Epstein.
