Manchester United Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.

A Marquee Acquisition for United

The forward, with six months remaining on her contract, has been a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a major signing for the Women’s Super League side.

Departure from Munich was expected after she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top strikers. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.

Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Forward Line

The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a significant boost to United’s attacking options. She has been highly consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.

  • Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Building Steam at Old Trafford

Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United appear to be gathering momentum.

Recent performances feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the winter break has seen additional business:

  1. The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since joining in 2023.

On Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”

The new defender, having joined from a club in the American league, said: “You can sense how much the club have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
