Conservative reactions to the limited release of files related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in images, while others expressed frustration over how extensive redactions portray former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Administration representatives justified the redactions with intense hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so open with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo outlining the redaction process.
Questions Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's name and likeness appear in portions of the materials, the widespread redactions raise serious questions about what may be concealed beneath them. Some Republicans immediately demanded greater transparency.
“The public are furious and walking away,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the law, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may move to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump grossly fails to comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he added.
Some Rightwing Commentators Rally Behind the Release
However, a segment of conservative pundits and former President loyalists swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a DOJ led by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of documents that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the men shown in pictures have their faces obscured.
Yet some are not, featuring high-profile individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, allowed certain rightwing voices to launch the offensive.
“It’s pretty rich how the Democrats falsely claimed President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of no criminal activity by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House has not been hiding those documents for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“The release is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and conceal permanently. So they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photos as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response concluded.
Overall Conservative Commentary Seems Muted
However, overall comment on the right was comparatively muted after the release, particularly when compared with the vociferous demands for transparency that came before the legislative vote to pass a bill mandating the documents' release.
The commentator, who recently accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest advocates for a complete release. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing influencers were given physical folders of materials that contained no new data.
