Chicago's MLB Team Sign Star Hitter Munetaka Murakami on a Lucrative Two-Year Contract.
In a notable move for their retooling roster, the Chicago White Sox have welcomed slugger Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a $34 million contract for the high-profile player.
Deal Structure and Incentives
The agreement includes a $1 million signing bonus, issued within 30 days, alongside compensation of $16 million for the 2026 season and $17M for the following year.
Notably, Murakami's final-year pay can increase based on award achievements in 2026:
- A seven-figure bonus for earning the Most Valuable Player award.
- $500,000 for finishing second or third in MVP voting.
- $250K for finishing fourth through 10th.
- Another $250,000 for earning the top rookie honor.
The contract provides that he cannot be assigned to the minor leagues without his consent and allows him to become a unrestricted player at the end of the deal. Further benefits include a team-provided interpreter and airfare between his home country and the States.
Transfer Payment and Historical Context
As part of the acquisition, Chicago is obligated to provide a compensation payment of $6,575,000 to the Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's Central League. The Swallows are also entitled to a supplemental fee of any triggered performance bonuses.
Murakami is set to become the fourth Japanese-born to suit up for the Chicago franchise, following reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu once managed Murakami during their time in Japan.
Player Profile
Murakami, a left-side batter who will turn 26 soon, bolsters a promising core of hitters in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are finished with a 60-102 season, placing last in the American League Central but showing a notable improvement from the previous campaign.
The winner of back-to-back Central League MVP honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami is renowned for a historic 2022 season where he hit 56 HRs, surpassing the longstanding record for a NPB hitter previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the most youthful hitter ever to achieve Japan's coveted batting Triple Crown.
His 2023 season was curtailed to 56 games due to an muscle issue. Even with striking out 64 Ks, he still managed .273 with 22 home runs and 47 runs batted in.
Over his career tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has accumulated a .270 batting average with 246 HRs, 647 RBIs, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in 892 games. He started playing primarily at first base, he has spent most of his time to third base.

In the semifinal against Mexico, he drove in a walk-off two-base hit that drove in Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a thrilling 6-5 victory. The following day in the final against the Team USA, he slugged a tying homer in the early innings, setting the stage for Japan's 3-2 title triumph.
